INDENI Energy Over the Years

INDENI operates under the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) with nearly 50 years of experience in petroleum refining, storage, and depot management. The company imports and sells finished petroleum products, including petrol, diesel, Jet A-1, kerosene, LPG, and HFO, and manages storage depots while providing maintenance, quality control, and fuel handling services such as bulk storage, product transfers, loading, testing, weighbridge operations, tank cleaning, and storage tank construction and rehabilitation.

1973 - 1999

INDENI Energy Company Limited was established in 1973 as a petroleum refinery located in Ndola in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. From its inception, the company operated as a State-owned Enterprise and served as a major component of the national fuel supply system, gaining foundational experience in crude oil refining and bulk fuel handling.

During this period, INDENI functioned primarily as a crude oil refinery. The company refined imported crude oil and built a strong technical foundation in processing, storage, and distribution of petroleum products. These years laid the groundwork for its later expansion into broader fuel management roles.

2000 - 2005

Between 2000 and 2005, INDENI was appointed as the management agency for the Zambia National Oil Company (ZNOC) fuel terminal. In this role, the company was responsible for procuring crude oil, which it processed at the INDENI Refinery, as well as purchasing finished petroleum products to cover national consumption shortfalls. INDENI supplied these products directly to the market. The terminal it managed during this period is now known as the Ndola Fuel Terminal (NFT), operated by TAZAMA Petroleum Products Limited.

2005 - 2021

After 2005, INDENI continued operating as a refinery while strengthening its expertise in bulk petroleum storage, depot management, quality control, and maintenance capabilities. Over these years, the company grew into one of Zambia’s most experienced institutions in fuel handling and depot operations, managing large storage capacities and expanding its operational competencies.

2022

In 2022, government policy changes transformed INDENI from a crude oil refinery into a bulk procurer, exporter, and distributor of finished petroleum products. Its mandate shifted from refining crude oil to importing and supplying finished fuels, a move aimed at filling supply chain gaps and promoting greater participation of Zambian businesses in the petroleum sector.
